JAKE’S JOURNEY: FROM BARLEY TO MALT MASTER

For generations, Eastern Idaho’s fertile lands have been the perfect home for growing barley. The soil, water, and sun come together to produce strong, abundant crops. But for Jake, growing barley was just the start. He wanted to know: What more can be done with this grain?

The answer? Malt. But malting wasn’t easy. It’s a complex process requiring expertise, dedication, and a lot of trial and error. Jake was determined to learn, so he went straight to the Modelo malting facility, asking for a job, even willing to work for free. The manager was skeptical, but Jake wasn’t discouraged.

“No expertise from you? Fine. I’ll create my own,” Jake thought. And that’s exactly what he did.

Jake started small, building his own malting equipment on the farm. With persistence and creativity, he scaled up, developing a mini-malt plant that allowed him to malt 1,000-pound batches. Ten years later, Jake invited the Modelo manager back to see his progress. Impressed, the manager said, “Jake, you’re a genius, but if I were an inspector, I’d be having a heart attack right now!”

That’s when they decided to go big. Together, they designed a new, industrial-scale malt plant, overcoming countless challenges along the way. After three years of hard work and innovation, they finally produced their first batch of exceptional malt.

FARM TO TABLE

The concept of "farm-to-table" emphasizes a direct connection between food production and consumption. It’s all about ensuring that food travels as short a distance as possible from where it's grown or produced to your plate. Here's what it entails

  • Local sourcing: Ingredients are often sourced from nearby farms or producers, reducing transportation time and promoting freshness.

  • Seasonal eating: Farm-to-table menus usually highlight foods that are in season, showcasing the best local produce.

  • Sustainability: This approach often supports environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing carbon footprints and minimizing food waste.

  • Community support: By working with local farmers and producers, the farm-to-table movement strengthens local economies and builds community relationships.

The result? Fresher food, unique dishes, and a deeper connection to the origins of what you’re eating. It’s a win-win for food enthusiasts and sustainability advocates alike!
